Product Information

Taurrus LIVE Biological Mite Control is a living predatory mite solution designed to tackle reptile mite infestations naturally, without the use of chemical pesticides. Available in a range of sizes to suit different collection scales and infestation severities, it is suitable for both active treatment and ongoing preventative use across reptile vivariums and terrariums.

The Threat Reptile Mites Pose

Snake mites (Ophionyssus natricis) are among the most serious threats to reptiles kept in captivity. They feed directly on the host's blood, stripping vital nutrients and leaving animals anaemic, stressed, and significantly more vulnerable to secondary illness. The parasites also introduce pathogens into the bloodstream during feeding, which can prove fatal in heavy or prolonged infestations. Conventional chemical treatments — including neonicotinoids and pyrethroids — carry their own risks to reptiles and are increasingly subject to parasite resistance over time.

How Biological Control Works

Taurrus consists of living predatory mites that actively hunt and consume reptile parasites, including O. natricis and other acari species. In adult form these predators measure under 1mm — larvae are white, adults orange to brown — but despite their size they are capable of attacking and killing prey three to four times larger than themselves. They pose absolutely no risk to reptiles, mammals, or humans, and have no negative environmental impact.

Why the Vivarium is an Ideal Environment

Predatory mites thrive in warm, humid conditions, which makes a well-maintained terrarium a natural habitat for them to establish and reproduce. Natural substrates such as coco fibre, peat, or moss provide ideal cover for the predators to move through and locate their prey. Once released, the population actively seeks out parasites throughout the enclosure. When the prey population is eliminated, the predatory mites decline naturally — no removal or intervention needed.

What to Expect After Release

Taurrus works over a period of days rather than instantly. After introduction, mite populations will first stabilise before entering a gradual decline. In cases of heavy infestation, more than one release may be required to achieve full control. Monitoring the parasite population after each release is recommended to assess progress and determine whether a follow-up application is needed.

Choosing the Right Size

Taurrus LIVE Biological Mite Control is available in multiple sizes suited to different levels of infestation and collection size. Smaller quantities are appropriate for treating one or two vivariums curatively, or a larger number of enclosures as a preventative measure. Select the size that reflects the scale of your setup and the severity of the problem you are addressing.

For reptile keepers who want an effective, chemical-free approach to mite control, Taurrus offers a well-evidenced biological alternative that works with the vivarium environment rather than against it.
