Taurrus LIVE Biological Mite Control is a living predatory mite solution designed to seek out and eliminate reptile parasitic mites naturally — without chemicals, without toxins, and without risk to your animals. Available in different sizes to suit varying levels of infestation and different numbers of enclosures, it is a practical tool for any reptile keeper dealing with persistent mite problems or looking to prevent them from taking hold.
The Threat Reptile Mites Pose
Snake mites (Ophionyssus natricis) are among the most damaging parasites a captive reptile can face. Feeding directly on the host's blood supply, they deprive reptiles of vital nutrients, cause persistent agitation, and leave animals anaemic and immunocompromised. As they feed, they can also introduce disease directly into the bloodstream — and in serious infestations, the consequences can be fatal. Conventional chemical treatments using compounds such as neonicotinoids and pyrethroids carry their own risks to the animals, and repeated use can lead to the parasite developing resistance over time.
A Biological Approach to Mite Control
Taurrus LIVE Biological Mite Control works by introducing a population of predatory mites into the vivarium — living organisms that actively hunt and consume O. natricis and other acari parasite species. These predators do not feed on reptiles or mammals and are completely safe for your animals, yourself, and the wider environment. There are no chemical residues, no withdrawal periods, and no risk of the target pest developing resistance.
How the Predators Work
Adult predatory mites measure under 1 mm — larvae appear white, while adults are orange to brown in colour. Despite their size, they are aggressive hunters capable of attacking and killing prey three to four times larger than themselves. Once introduced into a vivarium, they actively seek out parasites, reproduce in areas where prey is present, and naturally decline in number once the parasite population has been eliminated. The process takes several days to take effect: parasite numbers will first stabilise before gradually declining. In heavy infestations, more than one release may be necessary to achieve full control.
Ideal Conditions for Deployment
Predatory mites thrive in warm, humid environments — making a well-maintained terrarium an ideal habitat in which to establish a working population. Natural substrates such as coco fibre, peat, or moss provide particularly suitable conditions. Both tropical and temperate bioactive setups are well suited to this approach.
Choosing the Right Size
Taurrus LIVE Biological Mite Control is available in two sizes to suit different situations — from smaller or single-enclosure treatments through to larger or multi-vivarium scenarios. Each size is suited to either curative use in active infestations or preventative deployment in at-risk setups. Select the appropriate variant based on the scale of your collection and the severity of the problem you are addressing.
For reptile keepers who want an effective, chemical-free route to mite control, Taurrus offers a proven biological method that works with the enclosure environment rather than against it.
