Setting up

Common Name: Ball Python / Royal Python
Scientific Name: Python regius
Source: CB (Captive Bred)
Adult Size: 90–150cm (females typically larger than males)
Native Range: West and Central Africa, inhabiting grasslands, savannas, and open woodlands

Enclosure: A minimum 120×45×45cm Viperia PVC vivarium for adults, with a suitable moisture-retaining substrate such as coco husk or a topsoil-based mix. Provide a snug warm hide, a cool hide, sturdy branches, cork bark, and plenty of cover to encourage natural exploration and climbing behaviours.

Heating: Basking surface temperature of 31–33°C, with a warm-side ambient temperature of 28–30°C and a cool side of 24–26°C. A slight night-time temperature drop is acceptable, provided temperatures do not fall below 23–24°C. All heat sources should be appropriately guarded and thermostatically controlled.

Humidity: 60–80% ambient humidity, maintained through a moisture-retaining substrate, appropriate ventilation, and occasional watering of the substrate. A humid hide containing damp sphagnum moss can be particularly beneficial during shedding. Avoid constantly wet surfaces and waterlogged substrate.

UVB: A low-level UVB tube positioned over part of the enclosure to create a gentle UV gradient, with plenty of shaded areas and hides available. Although ball pythons are primarily nocturnal and crepuscular, access to appropriately positioned UVB lighting can support natural behaviours and provide opportunities for vitamin D3 synthesis.

Diet: Appropriately sized defrosted mice or rats, with prey generally no wider than the snake's widest body point. Juveniles typically feed every 7–10 days, while adults usually require feeding every 14–28 days, depending on their age, body condition, and prey size. Avoid overfeeding, as ball pythons can be prone to obesity in captivity.

About the Ball Python Setup

Ball pythons (Python regius), also known as royal pythons, are native to the grasslands, savannas, and open woodlands of West and Central Africa, where they spend much of their time sheltering in burrows and other secluded hiding places. They've become one of the most popular pet snakes in the UK reptile hobby thanks to their generally calm temperament, manageable size, and extraordinary variety of captive-bred colour and pattern morphs. Their name comes from their distinctive defensive behaviour of curling into a tight ball with their head tucked safely inside when threatened. With their striking appearance, gentle nature, and relatively straightforward care requirements, ball pythons are a firm favourite among both beginner and experienced reptile keepers.
