Product Information
The Solarmeter 6.2R UVB Radiometer is a handheld, precision instrument built specifically for measuring UVB output from reptile lamps and other UV sources. If you are serious about UVB husbandry — tracking lamp ageing, verifying basking zone intensity, or testing acrylic shield transmission — this is the tool that gives you real, repeatable data rather than guesswork. Used by experienced keepers, breeders, and herpetological researchers alike.
What It Measures
The 6.2R reads irradiance in the 280–320 nm UVB waveband, which is the biologically active range relevant to reptile UVB provision. The measurement range runs from 0 to 1999 µW/cm², with a resolution of 1 µW/cm² and a conversion rate of 3.0 readings per second. Accuracy is ±10% referenced to NIST standards. When used alongside a Model 5.7 total UV meter, you can also calculate percentage UVB by dividing the 6.2R reading by the combined UVA+UVB reading.
Sensor Technology
At the heart of the meter is a Silicon Carbide (SiC) photodiode, hermetically sealed within a UV glass window cap. An interference filter coating (metal oxide) suppresses most UVA from the sensor response, isolating the UVB signal. The diffuser is virgin Teflon at 0.003 thickness, and the lens is UV glass — both chosen for stable, consistent readings across lamp types.
Display and Build
- 3.5-digit LCD display with 0.4-inch digit height for clear readout
- Integral sensor housed in the top panel — aim directly at the UV source
- Compact and durable form factor: 4.2" L × 2.4" W × 0.9" D
- Weight: 4.5 oz including battery
- Powered by a single 9V DC battery, functional down to 6.5V — LCD dimming indicates when replacement is needed; typical battery life approximately 2 years under normal use
- Operating temperature: 32°F to 90°F; operating humidity: 5% to 80% RH
Practical Applications in the Vivarium
- Measuring UVB intensity at basking position within the terrarium
- Tracking lamp ageing over time — replace when output drops to approximately 70% of original new readings
- Testing UVB transmission through acrylic shields or covers
- Comparing output between reptile lamp types (note: readings are relative when comparing lamps with differing spectral power distributions)
- Establishing a usage log of hours versus output to schedule timely lamp changes
Using It Correctly
Press and hold the push-button on the face of the unit and aim the sensor window directly at the UV source. Allow lamps to warm up for at least five minutes before taking measurements. For ageing tests, keep measuring distance and position consistent between sessions. Always wear UV-blocking eyewear when working near active UV lamps. Keep the sensor free from oil, dirt, and dust, and clean only with a dry, soft cloth — do not expose the meter to extremes of temperature, humidity, shock, or dust.
For any reptile keeper who takes UVB provision seriously, the Solarmeter 6.2R removes uncertainty from lamp management entirely — giving you the confidence that your animals are receiving the UVB output your setup is designed to deliver.
