Product Information

The Reptile Systems Gold Infrared Unit is a specialist heating solution for vivarium keepers who want high-output, low-disturbance heat. Named for the distinctive gold metallic sheen the lamp shows when cold, this unit delivers infrared-rich heat across a wide area — available in multiple wattages to suit everything from compact terrariums to large exotic pet enclosures. The lamp is included.

Why Infrared?

The sun emits energy across a broad spectrum: ultraviolet, visible light, and infrared. For reptile keepers, infrared is particularly important because it is the portion of the spectrum responsible for warmth. Near infrared (IR-A, roughly 700–1400nm) and mid infrared (IR-B, roughly 1400–3000nm) both penetrate skin and tissue, contributing directly to thermoregulation, digestion, and natural activity levels in reptiles. The Reptile Systems Gold Infrared Unit is rich in both IR-A and IR-B, making it a physiologically meaningful heat source — not just a warm bulb.

How It Heats

Infrared radiation is direct and unaffected by air movement, which makes it significantly more efficient than convective heating methods. Heat is projected across a broad area rather than a concentrated spot, allowing reptiles to bask in a more natural, graduated warmth. Surrounding surfaces absorb and re-radiate that energy — replicating the way sun-warmed rock or substrate holds and releases heat. The result is all three modes of heat transfer: radiation from the lamp, conduction from warmed surfaces, and convection as the ambient air temperature rises.

Low Light, No Disruption

Infrared light is largely invisible to the human eye. This unit produces high levels of heat with very low visible light output, meaning it can be run throughout the day without overwhelming the enclosure's lighting setup — and importantly, it will not interfere with the animal's day-night cycle. Reduced light disturbance means reduced stress, which matters for long-term health and behaviour in captive reptiles.

Using the Unit

  • Always use with a dimming thermostat — the unit is not suitable for on/off thermostats
  • Can be used as the primary heat source within the terrarium
  • Available in a range of wattages — choose based on enclosure size and target temperature
  • Lamp is included with the unit; no separate purchase required
  • Compatible lamp wattages span a wide range, from smaller setups to large professional enclosures

Select the wattage variant that matches your enclosure size and heating requirements using the options above. If you are unsure which output is appropriate for your setup, our team is on hand to advise.
