Product Information

Psittacus Silex Grit is a calibrated flint-based insoluble grit designed specifically for small granivorous parrots — species such as budgerigars, Forpus, Agapornis, and Neophemas. It supports healthy gizzard function and overall digestive efficiency, addressing a genuine physiological requirement that seed-based diets create.

What it does

This grit works purely mechanically. Once ingested, the flint particles remain in the gizzard and assist in grinding down hard seeds — a process essential for proper nutrient extraction in highly granivorous birds. It plays no nutritional role and should not be confused with calcium-based grits, which serve an entirely different purpose as a mineral supplement.

Why insoluble grit matters

Unlike calcium grits, Psittacus Silex Grit does not dissolve under the action of gastric acids. It remains intact in the gizzard, providing lasting mechanical grinding action. Species with a strong specialisation in grass seed consumption have the highest demand for insoluble grit, and providing it consistently supports long-term digestive health.

Particle size and suitability

The flint particles are calibrated to 0.8–1.2mm — the optimum size for ingestion by small parrots. This precise granulometry ensures the grit is useful rather than merely present, matching the anatomical requirements of the birds it is intended for.

How to offer it

Psittacus Silex Grit should be made available at all times in a dedicated, separate feeder rather than mixed into food. Consumption will naturally vary depending on the hardness of the diet and the degree of seed specialisation in the individual bird or species.

Keeping insoluble grit permanently accessible removes a common digestive bottleneck for granivorous parrots and gives keepers confidence that a basic but critical requirement is consistently met.
