Product Information

Psittacus Silex Grit is an insoluble flint sand supplement designed specifically for small granivorous parrots — including budgerigars, Forpus, Agapornis, and Neophemas. Unlike calcium-based grits, its role is entirely mechanical, supporting healthy gizzard function and efficient digestion of hard seeds.

What It Does

The gizzard of a seed-eating parrot relies on insoluble grit to grind down hard food particles. Psittacus Silex Grit provides that mechanical action, helping the digestive tract function as it should. It does not dissolve under the action of gastric acids, meaning it remains effective inside the gizzard rather than being absorbed like a calcium supplement.

Calibrated Particle Size

The flint particles are sized at 0.8–1.2mm — calibrated to the optimal range for ingestion by small parrots. This ensures the grit is appropriately sized to be taken in naturally and to work effectively within the gizzard, rather than being ignored or passing through without benefit.

Not a Calcium Supplement

Silex Grit should not be confused with calcium grit. Calcium grits serve a nutritional purpose as a mineral source and dissolve in the gut. Psittacus Silex Grit is purely mechanical in function and the two products complement rather than replace each other. Species with a stronger granivorous diet — particularly those specialising in grass seeds — have the highest requirement for insoluble grit.

How to Offer It

Keep Psittacus Silex Grit permanently available in a separate, dedicated feeder so birds can self-regulate their intake. The amount consumed will vary depending on the hardness and composition of the diet and the degree of seed specialisation in the species kept.

A straightforward, species-appropriate supplement that supports digestive health in small parrots through correct mechanical grit provision — exactly what granivorous species need in a managed environment.
