Product Information

Psittacus Neonatal Hand Feeding is a first-stage weaning porridge formulated for hand-rearing the majority of parrot species from day one of life. It is designed for use from hatching through to the point at which primary feather quills begin to emerge, covering the critical early neonatal window when nutrition is most demanding.

Which Species Is It For?

Suitable for a wide range of parrot species including lories, amazons, cockatoos, macaws, eclectus, caiques, and pionus. It is not recommended for cockatiels, budgerigars, or other small Australian granivorous parrots — for those species, transition directly from crop milk to a mini pap formula over 2–3 days. It can also be used to supplement chicks still being partially parent-reared, and is appropriate for rehabilitating malnourished chicks.

Where It Sits in the Feeding Programme

This formula is intended for the second phase of the neonatal stage. For the first 5–7 days of life, a crop milk replacer should be used as the preceding first-phase feed. Once primary feather quills begin to develop, move on to a continuation formula appropriate for the next growth stage.

Key Ingredients

  • High proportion of dehydrated egg for early-stage protein and nutrient density
  • Contains papaya to support healthy digestive transit in developing chicks

Preparation and Feeding Guidance

Mix to approximately 25% solids in warm water. Parrots typically consume 7–10ml of prepared porridge per 100g of body weight per feed. Always confirm the crop is fully empty at least one hour before each feeding session. Delivery via syringe fitted with a soft virgin rubber or silicone probe is recommended — stimulate swallowing responses by gently pressing the lateral commissures of the beak before probe introduction.

Psittacus Neonatal Hand Feeding gives breeders and hand-rearers a structured, species-appropriate starting point for raising chicks through their most vulnerable early days, with clear guidance on when to progress to the next stage of the feeding programme.
