Product Information

Psittacus Neonatal Hand Feeding is a first-age hand-rearing formula designed for manual raising of parrot chicks from day one. It is intended for use across a broad range of parrot species including macaws, amazons, cockatoos, eclectus, caiques, pionus, and yakas, covering the second phase of the neonatal stage until the first feather cannons begin to emerge. It is also suitable as a dietary supplement for chicks still being parent-fed, and for the recovery of malnourished or underweight chicks.

Where It Sits in the Rearing Sequence

This formula is designed for the second neonatal phase. During the first 5–7 days of life, a crop milk replacer should be used first. Once that initial phase is complete, Psittacus Neonatal Hand Feeding takes over and continues until feather cannons become visible, at which point a continuation formula is appropriate. For nymphicus (cockatiels), budgerigars, and other small Australian granivorous parrots, this product is not recommended — in those species, the transition should go directly from crop milk to a mini formula over 2–3 days.

Composition and Digestive Support

The formula contains a high proportion of dehydrated egg, providing a nutrient-dense base suited to rapid early development. It also contains papaya, which supports healthy digestive transit in neonatal chicks — particularly important when the gut is still developing and feeding volumes are being established.

Preparation and Feeding Method

  • Mix at approximately 25% solids in warm water
  • Typical intake is 7–10 ml of prepared formula per 100g of chick body weight per feed
  • Confirm the crop is completely empty at least one hour before each feed
  • Administer using a syringe fitted with a soft virgin rubber or silicone probe
  • Stimulate swallowing by gently pressing the lateral commissures of the beak before probe introduction

Following the correct preparation concentration and feeding sequence gives chicks the best start and reduces the risk of crop stasis or overfeeding complications. Having this formula on hand as part of a structured neonatal protocol gives breeders and hand-rearers confidence at the most critical stage of a chick's development.
