What It's Made From

Vermiculite is a naturally occurring mineral produced by the exfoliation of volcanic rock. Because it is completely inert, it introduces no organic material that could degrade, harbour pathogens, or affect humidity stability over time. The fine grade offers good contact with egg surfaces and consistent moisture retention.

Using It as an Incubation Medium

To prepare an incubation box, add a generous layer of moistened vermiculite. A ratio of 2 parts vermiculite to 1 part water by weight is a widely used starting point, though individual species may require adjustment — always research the specific needs of the species you are working with before eggs are laid. Place eggs so that the top third remains exposed, and take care to keep eggs in the same orientation as they were found. Where possible, eggs should not touch one another during incubation.

Using It as a Substrate
