What It's Made From

Vermiculite is a naturally occurring mineral formed through the exfoliation of volcanic rock. Its inert composition means it will not introduce harmful compounds into the incubation environment or break down over the incubation period — critical when eggs can take weeks or months to hatch.

Using It as an Incubation Medium

To incubate reptile eggs, place a generous layer of moistened ProRep Vermiculite Coarse into your incubation box. A weight-based moisture ratio of 2 parts vermiculite to 1 part water is appropriate for many species, though individual species requirements will vary and should always be researched in advance. Position eggs so the upper third remains exposed, and ensure they are kept in the same orientation as found at the laying site — do not rotate them. Where possible, eggs should not make contact with one another during incubation.

As a Substrate for Invertebrates

ProRep Vermiculite Coarse also works well as a substrate or substrate component for tarantulas and other spiders. Its texture and moisture-retaining properties make it a practical base layer, used alone or mixed with other substrates.
