ProRep Bark Chips Coarse is a 100% natural substrate designed for reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates that need a humid vivarium environment. Sourced from bark, this coarse-grade product suits forest and jungle-dwelling species, giving keepers a reliable, species-appropriate base layer for terrariums and bioactive setups alike.

Who It's For

Any species requiring elevated humidity will benefit from this substrate — think tropical and forest reptiles, dart frog vivariums, invertebrate enclosures, and humid-loving amphibians. The coarse grade provides good airflow through the substrate layer, helping to balance moisture retention with ventilation.

Using and Maintaining the Substrate

Spread the bark chips evenly across the enclosure floor to a depth of at least 5cm (2 inches). The substrate can be lightly moistened to raise ambient humidity, but avoid waterlogging — overly saturated bark breaks down quickly and can harbour harmful bacteria. Spot-clean daily and replace the substrate completely every two to three weeks, or sooner if soiling is heavy.

Heatmat Compatibility

If an under-tank heatmat is your primary heat source, avoid applying a thick layer of bark chips directly above it. Insulating a heatmat with deep substrate can cause it to overheat. Always refer to your heatmat manufacturer's instructions when combining substrate with undertank heating.
