Product Information
ProRep Tortoise Life is a tortoise-specific substrate blended for keepers of Mediterranean and Russian tortoises — species that originate from arid, semi-arid, and scrubland environments. It is one of the most widely used tortoise substrates available in the UK, trusted by specialist breeders, experienced keepers, and institutions including London Zoo.
What's in the Mix
Tortoise Life is a 50:50 blend of high-quality loam topsoil and sand, with limestone grit incorporated throughout. The loam and sand combination replicates the texture and moisture-retention properties of the soils these tortoises naturally inhabit, far more closely than general-purpose substrates. The limestone grit provides a source of calcium in the event that the substrate is incidentally ingested.
Why It Works for Arid-Habitat Tortoises
Mediterranean and Russian tortoises are adapted to loose, well-draining soils that hold just enough moisture to allow burrowing without becoming waterlogged. Tortoise Life reflects those characteristics — it allows natural digging behaviour, drains effectively, and does not compact heavily underfoot. This makes it suitable for both indoor vivarium setups and outdoor tortoise tables.
Trusted by Specialists
Tortoise Life has become the go-to substrate for many dedicated tortoise breeders and keepers across the UK. Its track record with professional collections and zoological institutions speaks to its reliability as an everyday substrate, not just an occasional choice.
Available in a 10 litre bag, Tortoise Life gives keepers a species-appropriate substrate they can rely on for both day-to-day use and longer-term enclosure maintenance.
