Natural Behaviour, Practical Benefit

In the wild, tortoises actively seek out mineral-rich surfaces to scrape their beaks against. This behaviour serves two purposes: topping up calcium levels and naturally wearing down beak overgrowth. Placing this block in the enclosure allows your tortoise to do exactly the same on its own terms, without keeper intervention every feeding session.

Calcium Carbonate Formula

The block is made from 100% calcium carbonate — nothing else. The calcium carbonate used is highly bioavailable, meaning the tortoise's gut can absorb it efficiently rather than passing it through unused. This makes it a reliable dietary supplement when used alongside a properly balanced diet.

UVB and D3 — What You Need to Know

Calcium absorption in reptiles and amphibians depends on the presence of vitamin D3. Without adequate UVB lighting at the correct wavelength and intensity, D3 synthesis cannot occur and calcium supplementation is significantly less effective. Ensure your tortoise has access to appropriate UVB output, or provide oral D3 supplementation alongside this block.

Usage

Place the block directly into the enclosure. Your tortoise will locate and use it as needed — no preparation or scheduling required. This is a naturally sourced product, packed by hand. While every precaution is taken to prevent contamination, there is a very low risk that individual blocks may contain flint. Flint is straightforward to identify: it appears as solid black or brown material against the white calcium carbonate.
