What It's Made From

Sedge peat forms in shallow open-water environments and is composed primarily of decomposing sedges, reeds, cattails, and marsh grasses. This organic composition gives it a naturally fibrous texture that holds its structure under the weight of a burrowing animal while retaining moisture evenly throughout the substrate layer.

Behaviour and Habitat Benefits

The structure of sedge peat actively supports natural digging and burrowing behaviour, making it a solid choice for species that construct burrows or retreat underground to regulate temperature and humidity. It maintains moisture without becoming waterlogged, keeping the enclosure environment stable and reducing the frequency of intervention needed from the keeper.

How to Use It

  • Spread evenly across the enclosure floor to a depth appropriate for the species being kept
  • For most species, a depth of 2.5–5cm (1–2 inches) is sufficient
  • Burrowing species typically require 5–10cm (2–4 inches) to construct and maintain their burrows
  • Spot-clean regularly to remove soiled areas and maintain hygiene
  • Replace the substrate completely every 2–3 months, or sooner if conditions require it
  • Keep the substrate evenly moist — damp throughout, but never saturated
