Product Information

PR Sedge Peat is a naturalistic substrate sourced from renewable materials, designed for reptiles and invertebrates kept in humid and semi-humid setups. It suits species that require a substrate with genuine structural integrity — particularly those that burrow or dig as part of their natural behaviour.

What It's Made From

This substrate is composed primarily of decomposing sedges, reeds, cattails, and marsh grasses — plant matter that forms naturally in shallow open-water environments. That organic composition gives it a fibrous, workable texture that holds shape without compacting into a solid mass.

Why It Works for Humid Species

The fibre structure balances moisture retention with enough air pockets to avoid becoming waterlogged. It stays evenly moist when maintained correctly, supporting the microclimate needs of tropical and subtropical species without requiring constant intervention. It is part of a species-specific substrate range developed around the natural habitats these animals come from.

Burrowing and Digging Behaviour

For burrowing reptiles and invertebrates, substrate depth is as important as substrate type. PR Sedge Peat holds burrow tunnels without collapsing, allowing animals to construct and maintain runs that reflect natural behaviour. A depth of 2.5–5cm suits most surface-dwelling humid-habitat species; burrowing species typically require 5–10cm to construct burrows properly.

Maintenance

  • Spread evenly across the enclosure floor to an appropriate depth for the species
  • Spot-clean regularly to remove soiled areas
  • Replace the full substrate every 2–3 months, or sooner if conditions require
  • Keep evenly moist throughout — avoid saturating

A reliable, habitat-specific substrate for keepers who want their enclosure to function as well as it looks. The 10 litre bag is practical for single builds or as a top-up for established setups.
