Product Information

The Trumpet Pitcher 'Maroon' is a striking temperate carnivorous plant (Sarracenia sp.) that works equally well as a vivarium centrepiece or a standalone terrarium plant for keepers who appreciate something genuinely functional alongside their exotics. This is a medium-sized specimen, supplied live and ready to establish.

Growing Conditions

As a North American temperate species, this plant thrives in bright, direct sunlight during the warmer months — outdoors or on a south-facing windowsill is ideal. Strong light drives healthy pitcher production and that characteristic deep maroon colouration. Avoid low-light positions; this plant will not perform well in shade.

Winter Dormancy

A cold winter rest is not optional — it is essential for the long-term health of this plant. Once frosts arrive, move it to an unheated greenhouse or cold frame and allow it to die back naturally. It will re-emerge in spring, often with renewed vigour. During dormancy, keep the compost damp rather than wet.

Watering

Like all carnivorous plants, this Sarracenia must only be watered with rainwater or reverse osmosis water — tapwater is suitable only if mineral content is below 50ppm. Stand the pot in a tray of water year-round during the growing season to replicate its natural boggy habitat. This tray method is non-negotiable; allowing the compost to dry out will cause rapid decline.

Soil and Feeding

Use nutrient-poor compost — an equal mix of peat moss and perlite is well suited to Sarracenia cultivation. Standard potting compost or fertilised mixes will harm the roots. Despite the temptation to hand-feed, these pitchers are highly effective hunters in their own right and will intercept a notable number of flying insects without any intervention.

A rewarding plant for the keeper who wants living colour and genuine insect-trapping performance in one specimen. With the right conditions, the Trumpet Pitcher 'Maroon' is a durable, long-lived addition to any setup.
