Product Information
The Monkey Jar 'Bloody Mary' is a striking cultivar of Nepenthes, the tropical pitcher plant native to South-east Asia. With its deep, blood-red pitchers and vigorous climbing habit, it makes a genuinely impressive addition to a bioactive vivarium, a humid terrarium, or a well-lit windowsill. This is a medium-sized, established plant supplied live and ready to settle into its new environment.
Light and Growing Conditions
Nepenthes thrive in bright, indirect light — a sunny windowsill works well provided the plant isn't scorched by direct midday sun. As a natural climber, it performs best with some vertical space or support, and adapts well to hanging basket culture where its pitchers can trail freely.
Watering
Carnivorous plants are highly sensitive to minerals in tap water. Use rainwater or reverse osmosis (RO) water only — unless your tap water tests below 50ppm total dissolved solids. Keep the compost consistently moist but never waterlogged; roots sitting in standing water will rot. As a jungle species, Nepenthes also benefit from regular misting to maintain the humidity they need to produce pitchers reliably.
Soil and Potting
Like all carnivorous plants, the Monkey Jar 'Bloody Mary' requires nutrient-poor growing media. A mix of peat moss, perlite, and orchid bark in equal parts provides the open, free-draining structure these plants need. Avoid standard potting compost — the nutrient levels will damage the roots.
Feeding
In a vivarium or greenhouse setting, Nepenthes are highly capable of trapping their own food. Flying insects that enter the pitchers are digested naturally, and a healthy plant will do this without any intervention from the keeper. Supplementary feeding is rarely necessary and can cause pitchers to blacken if overdone.
A well-kept Monkey Jar 'Bloody Mary' is a functional, eye-catching plant that earns its place in any humid vivarium build or carnivorous plant collection. Supplied as a medium, established specimen from ProRep's live plant range.
