Creeping Fig is one of the most widely used live plants in terrarium keeping, and for good reason. This medium-sized specimen is part of ProRep's curated range of species selected specifically for vivarium use — not just repurposed houseplants, but plants chosen because they genuinely suit the conditions and scale of a reptile or amphibian setup.
Why Live Plants in a Vivarium
Bioactive and planted terrariums have moved firmly into the mainstream of reptile keeping, and the reasons go beyond aesthetics. Live plants provide natural cover, climbing opportunities, shade, and help maintain ambient humidity — all of which contribute to a more stimulating and naturalistic environment for the animals living in it.
Ficus pumila — The Classic Terrarium Creeper
Creeping Fig (Ficus pumila) is a vigorous climbing and trailing plant that produces small attachment roots along its stems, allowing it to grip and spread across rocks, cork bark, and wood. Planted near the top of a vivarium it will trail downwards, creating natural cascades of dense foliage. Positioned lower, it will climb and spread across the hardscape over time.
Conditions and Care
- Thrives in high humidity with consistently moist substrate
- Prefers good light levels for compact, healthy growth
- Will tolerate lower light but may become leggy with smaller, sparser leaves
- Well suited to tropical and jungle vivarium setups
- Small leaf size and climbing habit keep it proportionate inside a terrarium long-term
As a medium specimen, this plant arrives at a size that works immediately within an established vivarium build without overwhelming the space. ProRep's live plant range is chosen with terrarium scale in mind — these are plants that won't outgrow the setup they're placed in.
