ProRep Calcium Sand 5kg – Natural Limestone Reptile Substrate

PR Calcium Sand is a natural limestone-based substrate designed for reptiles from arid and desert environments. Unlike many loose substrates, it is made from pure natural limestone, meaning accidental ingestion is unlikely to cause gut impaction and actually contributes a source of calcium to the animal's diet. At 5kg, it is a practical bag size for most vivarium setups.

Suitable Species and Habitats

This substrate suits desert and arid-dwelling reptiles kept in dry terrarium setups. It replicates the pale, sandy terrain these animals encounter in the wild, supporting naturalistic behaviour such as digging and burrowing. It is not intended for humid or tropical species requiring moisture-retentive substrates.

Application and Depth

Spread the sand evenly across the vivarium floor to a depth of at least 2.5–5cm (1–2 inches). This depth allows for natural surface variation and supports basic digging activity without exposing the enclosure base.

Maintenance and Hygiene

• Spot-clean daily to remove waste and soiled material
• Replace the entire substrate every two to three weeks, or sooner if it becomes heavily contaminated or wet
• Small areas can be lightly misted to create localised humidity zones if required, but the substrate should not be allowed to become saturated

Heat Source Compatibility

If using an under-tank heat mat as the primary heat source, avoid laying the sand too deeply over the mat. An excessive layer of substrate can trap heat and cause the mat to overheat, which may damage the mat or create unsafe vivarium temperatures.
