PR Bio Life Leaf Litter Jungle 3L is a mixed tropical leaf litter designed to form the functional litter layer in bioactive vivariums. It suits a wide range of forest-dwelling species including snakes, lizards, frogs, and salamanders, providing both physical cover and the biological foundation that a working bioactive setup depends on.

What the Litter Layer Actually Does

The litter layer is not purely decorative. It plays a direct role in maintaining atmospheric and substrate humidity, and — critically — it creates the microhabitat in which beneficial bacteria, fungi, springtails, and woodlice establish and do their work. These custodian invertebrates depend on the litter layer for shelter and food, and without it they are quickly exposed and consumed. As the leaf litter breaks down, it also feeds plant life within the enclosure.

How to Build and Maintain the Layer

Start by breaking up a portion of the leaf litter by hand and scattering the finer pieces directly onto a suitable bioactive substrate to a depth of at least 1cm. Mist this down to hold it in place, then add a layer of unbroken leaves on top. The fine layer decomposes faster and provides immediate refuge for custodians; the unbroken layer above gives larger inhabitants somewhere to retreat. The litter layer should be a minimum of 3–4cm deep in total — in natural habitats, this layer can reach 24–30cm or more. Replenish the layer every 4–6 months, or sooner as breakdown occurs. Ideally, establish the litter layer 3–4 weeks before introducing your animals to allow the microfauna to colonise, though it can be added to an occupied enclosure if needed.
