ProRep Bio Life Leaf Litter Jungle

ProRep Bio Life Leaf Litter Jungle is a natural mixed-leaf litter designed to replicate the forest floor litter layer found in tropical and subtropical habitats. It is an essential component for bioactive vivariums housing snakes, lizards, frogs, and salamanders, providing both a functional ecosystem layer and natural cover for the animals within.

What the Litter Layer Does

Leaf litter serves several roles beyond decoration. It buffers atmospheric and substrate humidity, provides shelter and security for inhabitants, and — critically — creates the microhabitat in which beneficial bacteria, fungi, springtails, and woodlice establish themselves and carry out their clean-up work. As the leaves break down, they also supply organic matter that feeds plant life rooted in the substrate below.

How to Build Your Litter Layer

For a functioning litter layer, aim for a minimum depth of 3–4cm, though natural habitats often feature 24–30cm or more. Begin by breaking some of the leaf litter into smaller pieces by hand and scattering this fine layer directly onto your substrate — a depth of at least 1cm — then mist it to hold it in place. Follow this with a layer of whole, unbroken leaves on top. The fine layer decomposes quickly and provides refuge for custodian insects such as springtails, reducing predation from terrestrial inhabitants like dart frogs. The intact upper layer then offers cover and hiding sites for your animals.

Timing and Maintenance

Where possible, establish the litter layer at least 3–4 weeks before introducing your chosen species, giving the microfauna time to colonise. The litter layer should be topped up as it breaks down and is consumed — at minimum every 4–6 months, or sooner if needed. It is still viable to add and maintain the litter layer with animals already present in the enclosure.
