ProRep Bio Life Leaf Litter

ProRep Bio Life Leaf Litter is a natural mixed-leaf substrate layer designed for bioactive vivariums housing snakes, lizards, frogs, and salamanders. Scattered across the surface of your enclosure, it replicates the forest floor litter layer that forms a critical part of these animals' natural environments — providing cover, supporting microfauna, and contributing to a functioning bioactive system.

What the Litter Layer Actually Does

A well-established litter layer does far more than look natural. It helps regulate atmospheric humidity and substrate moisture levels, offers security and hiding opportunities for your animals, and creates the ideal microhabitat for beneficial bacteria, fungi, springtails, and woodlice to thrive. As it breaks down, it also provides nutrients that support plant growth within the enclosure.

How to Build Your Litter Layer

For best results, aim for a litter layer at least 3–4cm deep — though natural habitats often support 24–30cm or more. Start by breaking the leaf litter into finer pieces and scattering them over a suitable bioactive substrate to at least 1cm depth, then mist thoroughly to help everything settle. Follow with a layer of whole, unbroken leaves on top. The fine underlayer degrades quickly, giving custodian insects somewhere to shelter away from terrestrial inhabitants like dart frogs, while the intact upper layer provides visible cover for your animals.

Maintenance and Timing

Refresh the litter layer every 4–6 months, or sooner if it breaks down quickly. Where possible, establish the layer at least 3–4 weeks before introducing your animals, giving microfauna time to colonise — though it can be set up with animals already present. Keep in mind that custodian insects may need supplemental feeding to remain active and effective; ProRep Springtail Food is a suitable option to support them.
