PR Bio Life Drainage Medium is a fired substrate layer designed specifically for the base of bioactive terrariums. Made by firing ash at high temperature, the process causes air bubbles within the material to expand and form a honeycomb of interconnected internal chambers — producing a lightweight, inert, and durable drainage aggregate that actively supports a functioning bioactive setup.

How It Works

Laid beneath your primary substrate, this drainage layer acts as a water reservoir, drawing moisture upward into the substrate above and creating a natural gradient from wet at the base to drier at the surface. This mimics the moisture stratification found in natural soil profiles, giving your vivarium inhabitants the ability to self-regulate where they rest, burrow, or feed based on humidity preference.

Bioactive Bacterial Support

The honeycomb structure of each piece provides an exceptionally high surface area relative to its size. This makes it an ideal environment for colonies of beneficial bacteria to establish and thrive. Those bacteria play a direct role in breaking down and neutralising potentially harmful waste products produced within the terrarium ecosystem — reducing the need for full substrate changes and supporting a more self-sustaining enclosure.
