Monkey Cups 'Ventrata' (Nepenthes sp.)

The Monkey Jar 'Ventrata' is a tropical carnivorous plant and one of the most rewarding Nepenthes for both reptile keepers and carnivorous plant enthusiasts. A naturally vigorous climber from South-east Asian jungle environments, it works brilliantly as a vivarium feature plant or a standalone display specimen, and it earns its keep by actively catching live insects.

Light & Positioning

Ventrata thrives in bright, indirect light and does particularly well on a windowsill. As a climbing species, it also performs well in a hanging basket where its pitchers can develop and hang freely.

Watering

Like all Nepenthes, Ventrata must be watered with rainwater or reverse osmosis water — tap water is only suitable if your supply reads below 50ppm mineral content. Keep the substrate consistently moist but never allow the roots to sit in standing water, as waterlogging will cause root rot. Regular misting is essential to maintain the humidity this jungle species needs.

Substrate

Nepenthes require nutrient-poor growing media. A balanced mix of peat moss, perlite, and orchid bark gives the right combination of drainage, aeration, and low fertility that Ventrata needs to thrive.

Feeding

Ventrata is fully capable of catching its own prey and will consume a notable quantity of flying insects without any intervention. Supplementary feeding is rarely necessary and can harm the plant if overdone — let it do what it does naturally.

A medium-sized specimen ready to display, the Monkey Jar 'Ventrata' brings genuine tropical character to a vivarium or growing setup while remaining straightforward to maintain for keepers who get the basics right.
