The Lucky Reptile Hydro Drain 8L is a specialist clay drainage substrate designed for tropical vivarium and terrarium builds. It sits beneath your main substrate layer, managing moisture at the base of the enclosure to keep root zones healthy and surface substrate stable.

How It Works

Hydro Drain functions as a dedicated drainage layer. Water migrates down through the upper substrate and is held within the clay pieces, which are structured to store moisture and release it gradually. This reservoir effect sustains plant roots and helps maintain ambient humidity without waterlogging the substrate above.

Keeping the Substrate Layer Healthy

As long as standing water stays below the top of the Hydro Drain layer, the substrate above remains free-draining and workable. Only once the clay's storage capacity is exceeded will water begin to pool — giving you a clear buffer against swampy conditions at the surface. A minimum layer depth of 3cm is recommended for effective drainage.

Building a Bioactive or Planted Setup

For best results, lay Hydro Drain at the base of the enclosure, cover it with a hydro fleece membrane to prevent substrate mixing, then add your chosen upper substrate — such as a tropical terrarium humus — on top. This layered approach is the foundation of most tropical bioactive builds and planted vivarium setups.
