Product Information

Wild Chicory (Cichorium intybus) is a live edible plant grown specifically for reptile keepers. Supplied in a 10cm pot, this is a practical, nutrient-dense food source for herbivorous reptiles — particularly bearded dragons and tortoises — that can be offered directly or cultivated on to provide a continuous supply of fresh greens.

Nutritional Profile

Wild chicory is high in vitamins A, C, and K, supporting immune function, skin condition, and overall vitality. It is also a strong source of calcium and iron, both important for bone density and muscle health in reptiles. The leaves, stems, roots, and flowers are all edible, giving you flexibility in how you offer it.

Foraging and Enrichment

Feeding live plants rather than cut greens encourages natural foraging behaviour, which provides meaningful mental and physical stimulation. Reptiles can graze at their own pace, interacting with the plant in a way that closely mirrors how they would feed in the wild. This is particularly beneficial for tortoises and bearded dragons kept in vivarium or tortoise table setups.

Suitability

  • Bearded dragons — readily take the leaves, stems, and flowers; the purple blooms are especially well received
  • Tortoises — an excellent source of fresh greens and a strong addition to a varied diet
  • Other herbivorous reptiles — suitable for any species that regularly consumes leafy plant matter

Growth and Potential

Given the right conditions, wild chicory can reach 1 to 1.5 metres in height, producing abundant foliage and, if allowed to mature, distinctive purple flowers. Starting from a 10cm pot, keepers can grow the plant on outdoors or indoors to create a long-term, renewable food supply rather than a one-off feed.

Care Requirements

  • Light: Moderate sunlight; indirect light works well for indoor growing
  • Water: Keep the soil consistently moist — avoid waterlogging
  • Soil: Well-drained, nutrient-rich soil supports the healthiest growth
  • Location: Suitable for both indoor and outdoor cultivation

Grown without harmful chemicals or pesticides, this is a clean, reliable addition to any herbivore's diet. Whether you offer it straight from the pot or grow it on for a larger harvest, it is a straightforward way to add variety and genuine nutritional value to your reptile's routine.
