Appearance

Jade plants are immediately recognisable by their thick, fleshy, oval-shaped leaves in a deep, glossy green — often edged with a subtle flush of red. Young stems share that same smooth, succulent texture before maturing into a woody, brown structure that adds natural character to the display.

Light and Positioning

These plants thrive in strong, bright light and are an excellent choice for well-lit enclosures or vivarium setups positioned near a south or west-facing window. They can tolerate lower light levels, though growth will slow. During warmer months they can be moved outdoors into a sunny spot, provided they are brought back inside before temperatures drop in autumn.

Substrate and Planting

For best results, plant into a free-draining mix — either standard compost blended with additional horticultural grit, or a dedicated cactus and succulent compost. Adding a top dressing of fine gravel or small pebbles helps retain a natural appearance, reduces surface evaporation, and keeps the base of the plant from sitting in moisture.
