What They're Used For

Golden fruit flies are a well-established feeder insect for animals that require small, mobile prey. They're widely used as a primary food source for dart frogs, mantises, spiderlings, and baby amphibians, and suit any vivarium or terrarium inhabitant that feeds on micro-prey. The small size and movement pattern of D. melanogaster make them particularly effective for triggering a feeding response in young or shy animals.

How They're Supplied

Cultures are housed in a ventilated plastic tub with small air holes along the sides to maintain airflow while keeping the flies contained. During warmer months, the outer packaging may include additional perforations to assist with temperature regulation in transit. In colder months, a heat pack may be included to help maintain a safe temperature during delivery.

Feeding Your Flies Before Use

To get maximum nutritional benefit from your culture, keep the flies well-fed right up until you use them. Suitable foods include:

• Fresh leafy greens, carrot, squash, or sweet potato — these provide hydration as well as nutrients
• Specialist gut-loading diets to further boost nutritional value
• Remove any uneaten food daily to prevent mould and maintain clean conditions

Storage and Care
