Product Information
Exo Terra Coco Husk is a natural coconut fibre substrate designed for tropical and humidity-dependent vivarium setups. Sourced from plantation-grown coconut husk in Vietnam and processed to a consistently clean, ready-to-use standard, it is well suited to reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates that require a stable, moisture-retentive substrate. Available in a range of sizes to suit enclosures of different scale, from smaller tropical terrariums to larger planted bioactive builds.
Natural Humidity Regulation
Coconut husk fibre has inherent hygroscopic properties — it absorbs and releases moisture gradually, helping to stabilise humidity levels within the terrarium without the need for constant intervention. This makes it particularly well suited to species with specific humidity requirements, where consistent atmospheric moisture supports healthy shedding and helps reduce the risk of respiratory issues.
Processing and Safety
Each batch is ground, sieved, triple machine washed to remove residual salt content, then machine dried and heat-treated to reduce bacterial contamination. The substrate is non-toxic and free from chemicals and pesticides, making it safe for even sensitive species including frogs, salamanders, and burrowing invertebrates. It is also highly resistant to mould and decay.
Bioactive and Drainage Benefits
- Strong water retention capacity supports tropical humidity profiles
- Improved aeration and drainage encourage the establishment of microfauna colonies
- Healthy waste-reducing organisms thrive in this substrate, helping keep the enclosure clean
- Fully biodegradable — used substrate can be safely composted
- Made from a sustainable, plantation-grown resource
How to Use
Spread a 5–10 cm layer across the terrarium floor and mist or water to reach the humidity level required for your species. Use a hygrometer to monitor conditions and adjust watering frequency accordingly. Spot clean daily and replace fully when necessary. For enclosures with high ventilation or demanding humidity requirements, a substrate heater placed beneath the terrarium can help drive evaporation from the substrate.
Choosing the right bag size means less waste and fewer top-ups — smaller options suit compact setups or trial use, while the larger sizes are the practical choice for deep-substrate bioactive builds or keepers maintaining multiple enclosures. Whichever size you select, the substrate quality and processing standard remain consistent across the range.
