Product Information

The Exo Terra Terrarium Draining Substrate (PT3115) is a natural, non-organic drainage layer designed to sit beneath the decorative top substrate in a bioactive or planted vivarium. It solves one of the most common problems in tropical terrarium setups: waterlogged substrate leading to rot, anaerobic conditions, and failing live plants. Whether you're running a full bioactive build or simply want to maintain a healthier water table in your enclosure, this drainage layer does the foundational work.

Natural, Non-Decomposing Composition

Unlike organic substrates that break down over time, this draining substrate is non-organic, meaning it will not rot, decompose, or contribute to bacterial contamination in the base of the terrarium. It maintains its structure and function long-term, making it a reliable part of any bioactive setup.

Drainage and Biological Filtration

Water passes through the decorative top layer and into this drainage substrate, where it is held clean and separate from the upper substrate. The drainage layer functions as a biological filtration system, keeping that retained water in a condition where it can be actively recirculated — through waterfalls, rain systems, or dripping plant features — without becoming stagnant or foul.

Preventing Substrate Mixing

To keep the drainage substrate and your chosen top layer fully separated, it is designed to be used alongside a draining mesh layer placed between the two substrates. This prevents the substrates from gradually mixing over time, which would compromise drainage performance and contaminate the water reservoir below.

Compatible with Water Recirculation Systems

The clean water collected within the drainage layer can be drawn back into active terrarium features such as waterfalls, rain systems, or dripping plant setups. This makes it a practical component in more complex vivarium builds where humidity cycling and water movement are part of the environmental strategy.

For any keeper building a bioactive tropical vivarium, this 2kg bag provides the drainage foundation that keeps the rest of the enclosure functioning as it should — protecting your substrate, your plants, and your animals from the effects of standing water.
