Product Information

ET Riverbed Sand Brown is a natural, extremely fine-grained sand sourced from African riverbeds, designed for aqua-terrariums and vivarium setups where substrate safety and naturalism matter. It is particularly well suited to aquatic turtles, soft-shell turtles, frogs, and salamanders — species that burrow, rest on, or regularly come into contact with their substrate.

Why Riverbed Sand Works for These Species

In the wild, aquatic and semi-aquatic reptiles and amphibians live on soft, yielding riverbeds — not gravel or coarse rock. Rough substrates can abrade sensitive skin and underbellies, causing tissue damage over time. ET Riverbed Sand Brown replicates the fine, smooth texture of a natural riverbed, allowing soft-shell turtles and burrowing species to dig and settle without risk of injury.

Safety When Ingested

Accidental ingestion of substrate is a reality with aquatic and ground-dwelling species. Unlike gravel or pebbles, which can cause serious digestive problems, this sand is sufficiently fine to pass through the digestive system without obstruction. This makes it a considerably safer choice than coarser alternatives for species that feed at the substrate level.

Composition and Natural Origin

  • Formed naturally over time in African riverbeds — extremely fine and rounded grain structure
  • No added dyes or artificial colourants
  • No chemical treatments or additives
  • Brown colouration is entirely natural

Where to Use It

  • Primary substrate for aquatic and semi-aquatic turtle setups
  • Ideal for soft-shell turtles that require fine substrate for burrowing behaviour
  • Suitable for frogs and salamanders in aqua-terrariums
  • Can also be used as a substrate in dry desert terrarium builds

ET Riverbed Sand Brown gives keepers a substrate that supports natural behaviour, reduces injury risk, and keeps the setup looking clean and authentic — without any of the guesswork that comes with untreated or chemically altered alternatives.
