Exo Terra Riverbed Sand Brown is a natural, fine-grain substrate sourced from an African river environment, shaped over time into smooth, rounded particles. At 4.5kg, it is suited to aqua-terrariums and terrariums housing aquatic turtles, soft-shell turtles, frogs, salamanders, and other water or ground-dwelling reptiles that benefit from a soft, natural substrate underfoot.

Why Substrate Grain Size Matters

Coarse substrates like gravel or pebbles carry a real risk of injuring soft skin tissue and can cause serious digestive problems if accidentally ingested. Riverbed Sand's extremely fine, round grain profile minimises both of these risks — it is far less likely to cause abrasion and passes through the digestive system more safely than angular or chunky materials.

Natural Digging and Burrowing Behaviour

Soft-shell turtles in particular are instinctive diggers, and a loose, fine substrate is essential for allowing that behaviour in captivity. Frogs and salamanders also benefit from the soft texture when moving through or partially burying themselves. Providing the right substrate encourages natural activity and reduces stress-related inactivity.
