Dwarf Umbrella Tree (Schefflera arboricola)

The Dwarf Umbrella Tree (Schefflera arboricola) is a robust, fast-growing tropical plant well suited to bioactive and naturalistic vivarium builds. With glossy, palmate foliage and a strong growth habit, it brings genuine structure and depth to tropical and rainforest-style enclosures. Available in a range of sizes to suit different setups and keeper intentions.

Why It Works in a Vivarium

Schefflera arboricola is a practical choice for keepers who want a plant that does more than fill space. Its lush canopy creates shaded zones and climbing opportunities, while its naturally developing aerial roots allow it to attach to cork bark, branches, and other vivarium décor over time — integrating organically into the layout as it grows.

Well-Suited Species

This plant is a strong match for arboreal species that benefit from elevated foliage cover and perching opportunities. Chameleons in particular respond well to the layered structure it provides, though it suits a broad range of tropical and rainforest-dwelling reptiles.

Growth and Maintenance

Under appropriate conditions — good humidity, warmth, and indirect light — Dwarf Umbrella Trees grow readily and can reach a substantial size. Keepers wanting to keep the plant compact can prune it without harming the plant, making it manageable long-term regardless of enclosure size.

Choosing the Right Size

These plants are available in more than one size, allowing you to select something that fits your current enclosure or gives you a head start with a more established specimen. Consider the scale of your build and the species you're keeping when making your selection from the options above.
