Candle Succulent (Stapelia stapeliiformis)

The Candle Succulent (Stapelia stapeliiformis) is a striking, low-maintenance succulent well suited to arid and semi-arid vivarium setups, as well as sunny indoor displays. This medium-sized specimen offers genuine visual interest without the upkeep demands of more delicate plants.

Appearance

Upright, columnar stems grow vertically and are marked with distinctive silver-green striping set against a deeper forest green — a natural contrast that draws the eye. The surface texture is firm rather than prickly, giving it a bold structural presence that reads well against sand, stone, or bark substrates.

In the Vivarium

This species suits dryland bioactive builds and desert-themed terrariums housing species such as bearded dragons, uromastyx, or arid-adapted geckos. Its upright growth habit makes use of vertical space without overcrowding the enclosure floor, and its tolerance for dry conditions means it won't deteriorate under the low-humidity levels these setups require.

Care Requirements

• Prefers bright, direct or strong indirect light — position near the basking zone or under a high-output UVB/visible light source
• Water sparingly; allow the substrate to dry fully between waterings
• Not frost-tolerant; suited to the warm conditions of a desert vivarium or a sunny windowsill
• No sharp spines — safe for handling and does not pose a risk to inhabitants

A genuinely easy plant to keep alive and looking good, the ProRep Live Plant Candle Succulent adds authentic texture and structure to any arid setup without demanding specialist care from the keeper.
