Why Black Crickets

Black crickets are well-established in UK reptile keeping for good reason: they're active, easy for animals to track and catch, digestible, and highly nutritious. At med/small size, they're well-suited to hatchlings and juveniles that can't yet handle a full-sized feeder. They're equally at home in a frog vivarium or a tarantula enclosure as they are in a reptile terrarium.

Packaging

Crickets arrive in a ventilated plastic tub with egg-box cardboard inside, giving insects surface area to spread out and reducing the risk of overcrowding or trampling in transit. Air holes along the sides keep airflow consistent while containing the insects securely. During warmer months the outer box may carry additional perforations; in colder months a heat pack may be included to maintain a safe transit temperature.

Keeping Them in Condition

To get the most from your feeder insects, continue gut-loading them at home until they're used. Offer fresh leafy greens, carrot, squash, or sweet potato — these provide both hydration and nutrients that transfer directly to your animal. Remove uneaten food daily to prevent mould and keep the holding container clean. House at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and draughts, with enough space and hiding spots to prevent stress and losses.

Animal Suitability and Feeding

Med/small black crickets are sized for smaller mouths — juvenile dragons, baby geckos, young chameleons, most frogs, and smaller invertebrates including mantids and spiders. Well-maintained, gut-loaded crickets contribute meaningfully to your animal's nutrition and digestion, rather than simply filling a feeding quota.
