Firebrats - Colony

Firebrats are a live feeder insect well suited to keepers who work with small or juvenile animals. This culture contains approximately 200 individuals dispatched directly from the breeder, gut-loaded before packing to arrive in the best nutritional condition possible. The culture will continue to reproduce provided it is kept warm, humid, and well fed.

Why Firebrats?

Their small size makes them an excellent choice for animals that cannot yet take standard livefood. In the vivarium trade they are commonly used for baby frogs, juvenile lizards, jumping spiders, small mantids, and micro geckos such as mourning geckos. They are soft-bodied, easy to digest, and highly nutritious — qualities that matter when feeding growing or delicate animals.

Packaging and Transit

The culture arrives in a ventilated plastic tub with egg-box cardboard included to increase surface area and reduce crowding. Air holes along the sides maintain airflow while keeping insects securely contained. In colder months a heat pack may be included to protect the culture during transit; in warmer months the outer box may carry additional perforations for ventilation.

Keeping Your Culture

Firebrats thrive at temperatures above 36°C — keep them warm and away from draughts and direct sunlight. Offer fresh leafy greens, carrot, squash, or sweet potato regularly; remove uneaten food daily to prevent mould. Adequate food and warmth will keep the colony active and reproducing.

Gut-Loading and Nutrition

Firebrats dispatched from the breeder are pre-fed before packing. To maintain their nutritional value after arrival, continue feeding them a varied diet right up until they are used. Well gut-loaded feeders pass on significantly better nutrition to the animals consuming them.
