Product Information

Common Name: Yellow Tree Monitor
Scientific Name: Varanus reisingeri
Source: CBID
Adult Size: Approximately 80–100cm total length
Native Range: Wessel Islands and surrounding islands off the northern coast of Australia

Enclosure: A minimum 120x60x180cm Viperia PVC vivarium — being an arboreal (tree-dwelling) species, height is essential; furnish the enclosure with sturdy climbing branches, cork bark sections, and secure hides both at height and at ground level, with a deep leaf-litter or bioactive substrate to retain humidity
Heating: Basking spot of 40-45°C, ambient temperature of 28–32°C, with a night-time drop to around 22–24°C
Humidity: 70–80%; achieve this by misting the enclosure once or twice daily and using a moisture-retaining substrate such as coco coir or a bioactive mix
UVB: A 12% UVB tube run along most of the vivarium's width, positioned so the animal can bask at approximately 20–30cm from the lamp; as a diurnal (day-active) basking species from a tropical island environment, strong UVB provision is important for long-term health
Diet: Primarily insects (large roaches, locusts, and mealworms), supplemented with occasional small rodents and other protein sources such as whole prey fish or crustaceans; juveniles can be fed every one to two days, while adults do well on three to four substantial feeds per week — dust prey with a calcium and vitamin supplement regularly

ABOUT THIS SPECIES

The Yellow Tree Monitor (Varanus reisingeri) is a strikingly beautiful arboreal monitor native to the Wessel Islands of northern Australia — a small, remote island chain that has given rise to this vividly coloured and seldom-seen species. With its warm yellow and black patterning and slender, agile build, it is one of the most visually impressive monitors available in the hobby, and one that genuinely turns heads in any collection.

This is a species best suited to experienced reptile keepers who can commit to replicating its warm, humid, tropical environment and appreciate a monitor that is naturally alert and active rather than immediately handleable. With patience and consistent, calm interaction from a young age, individuals can become reasonably settled with their keeper — making them a genuinely rewarding species for the dedicated enthusiast.
