ABOUT THIS SPECIES

Hydrosaurus weberi, commonly known as Weber’s Sailfin Dragon, is a large semi-aquatic agamid lizard native to Indonesia. It belongs to the group of sailfin dragons known for the tall crest that runs along the tail and lower back, a feature that becomes especially prominent in mature males.

In the wild, this species inhabits humid forest environments close to rivers, streams and mangrove systems. Individuals are frequently seen basking on branches or rocks near water, where they can quickly escape by diving and swimming when disturbed.

Weber’s Sailfin Dragons have powerful limbs and long claws suited for climbing tree trunks and vegetation along riverbanks. Their colouration usually ranges from grey and olive tones to darker brown with subtle banding, helping them blend into forest and riparian habitats. Spacious enclosures with both climbing structure and a large water feature best reflect the natural environment used by this species.
