ABOUT THIS SPECIES

A true dune specialist, Phrynocephalus mystaceus is built for loose sand: it uses toe fringes for traction and can disappear fast by burying itself when startled. The feature everyone remembers is the threat display—flattened body, wide-open mouth, and bright cheek “flaps” that flash suddenly to shock predators.

In captivity they do best when the setup matches that lifestyle: plenty of open ground for sprinting and basking, plus deep substrate and tight hides so they can dig in and feel secure. They’re most confident when they can choose between exposed sand and sheltered pockets, and they’ll often settle into a predictable routine of short bursts of activity between long, motionless pauses.
