Product Information

Taurrus LIVE Biological Mite Control - L is a living predatory mite solution designed to seek out and eliminate reptile parasites directly within the vivarium or terrarium. It is aimed at reptile keepers dealing with active mite infestations or those who want a preventative, chemical-free approach to parasite management. The large size treats 1–2 vivariums curatively, or up to 4 vivariums preventatively.

Why Reptile Mites Are a Serious Problem

Snake mites (Ophionyssus natricis) are among the most damaging parasites a captive reptile can face. They feed directly on the host's blood, stripping nutrients and causing anaemia, stress, and increased susceptibility to illness. Crucially, they also introduce pathogens into the bloodstream during feeding, which can prove fatal if an infestation goes untreated. Conventional pesticide-based treatments — including neonicotinoids and pyrethroids — carry risks to the reptile itself, and parasites can develop resistance to them over time.

How Biological Control Works

Taurrus LIVE Biological Mite Control contains live predatory mites that are natural enemies of Ophionyssus natricis and other acari parasite species found in reptile enclosures. Despite measuring less than 1mm in adult form — larvae appearing white, adults orange to brown — these predators are aggressive hunters capable of attacking and killing prey three to four times their own size. They do not feed on reptiles or mammals, making them entirely safe for the animal, the keeper, and the wider environment.

Establishing the Predator Population

Once released into the enclosure, the predatory mites actively hunt out parasites and reproduce in areas where prey is present. A warm, humid terrarium environment suits them well, particularly where natural substrates such as coco fibre, peat, or moss are used — conditions that support colony establishment. The mode of action takes several days: expect the parasite population to stabilise first, then progressively decline. In heavy infestations, more than one release may be required to fully clear the enclosure.

Usage Guide

  • Treats 1–2 vivariums as a curative treatment for active infestations
  • Treats up to 4 vivariums as a preventative measure
  • No chemical residues — safe for use with all reptile species
  • Predators naturally disappear once the prey population has been eliminated
  • Best results achieved in warm, humid enclosures with natural substrate

For keepers who want to manage mites without introducing chemicals into the enclosure, Taurrus LIVE Biological Mite Control - L offers a targeted, evidence-based alternative that works with the vivarium environment rather than against it.
