Enclosure: Secure terrestrial vivarium with good burrowing depth; minimum 90 × 45 × 45 cm for an adult (larger for big females)
Heating: Warm spot 28-30 °C; cool end 24 °C; night drop 18–22 °C

Humidity: 30–50% with strong ventilation; add a humid hide if sheds are dry

UVB: Low-level UVB

Diet: Frozen-thawed rodents; juveniles typically every 7 days, adults every 7–10 days (adjust to body condition)

Water: Fresh water bowl available at all times; keep clean and tip-proof

ABOUT THIS SPECIES

Western hognoses are compact, terrestrial burrowers with an upturned “hog” nose built for digging in loose substrate. With enough depth to tunnel and a couple of snug hides, they’ll often spend part of the day buried and then emerge to cruise the enclosure edges, especially late afternoon and around feeding routines.

Give them digging depth and broken sight-lines and you’ll see far more natural cruising and foraging rather than a snake that stays tucked away.
