ABOUT THIS SPECIES

Xenopeltis unicolor, commonly called the Sunbeam Snake, is a non-venomous burrowing snake native to Southeast Asia. It is named for its highly iridescent, glossy scales that reflect light in a rainbow-like sheen. The species is primarily nocturnal and fossorial, spending most of its time hidden under leaf litter or soil.

Sunbeam Snakes are constrictors that feed on small rodents and occasionally other small vertebrates. They are slow-moving on the surface but are highly effective burrowers.

In captivity, they thrive in enclosures with deep, moist substrate for burrowing, stable warmth, and a secure environment. Regular feeding with appropriately sized prey and access to water supports their natural behaviour and health.
