ABOUT THIS SPECIES

Varanus similis, commonly called the Spotted Tree Monitor, is a small to medium-sized arboreal monitor lizard native to Papua New Guinea and nearby islands. Its dark body is marked with small light spots, providing effective camouflage among trees and foliage.

This species is diurnal and highly active, spending most of its time navigating branches while hunting insects and small vertebrates. Its prehensile tail, long limbs, and sharp claws make it a skilled climber capable of rapid movement through the canopy.

In captivity, Spotted Tree Monitors thrive in tall, enriched enclosures with climbing structures, hiding spots, and access to water. Providing warm temperatures, moderate humidity, and a varied carnivorous diet supports natural behaviour, healthy growth, and overall wellbeing.
