ABOUT THIS SPECIES

The Tokay Gecko is one of the largest and most recognisable gecko species in the world. Named after the distinctive “to-kay” call produced by males, it is a striking arboreal lizard with a grey-blue base colour covered in vivid orange or red spotting. This bold pattern provides camouflage against tree bark and rock surfaces within its native habitat.

Widely distributed across Southeast Asia, the species inhabits tropical forests, limestone areas and even buildings where it hunts insects and other small prey at night. Tokay geckos are primarily nocturnal and spend much of the day hidden in tree hollows, behind bark or within dense foliage.

Their large head, strong jaws and adhesive toe pads make them highly effective climbers and predators. Individuals are typically territorial and rely on vocalisations, posturing and their distinctive call to communicate and defend space. In captivity they benefit from a vertically arranged enclosure with plenty of climbing structure and secure hiding places that replicate their arboreal lifestyle.
