Adults require a very large, horizontally oriented enclosure with a deep substrate of soil and sand mix for digging, several secure hides at both the warm and cool ends, a robust basking platform, and a large water feature or soaking trough — these are semi-aquatic monitors that appreciate the opportunity to submerge.
Heating: Basking spot of 40-45°C directly on the basking surface, with an ambient air temperature of 28–32°C on the warm side and a cool side around 24–26°C. Night-time temperatures can drop to 22–24°C safely.
Humidity: 60–80%; achieved through regular misting, a large water feature, and a moisture-retentive substrate. Good ventilation is important to prevent stagnant, stale air at high humidity levels.
UVB: A 12% UVB tube run along most of the vivarium's width, positioned so the animal can bask approximately 25–40cm from the lamp. Quince monitors are diurnal (active during daylight) baskers originating from tropical island environments with strong, open sunlight, making high-output UVB essential for long-term health.
Diet: Quince monitors are voracious, opportunistic carnivores (meat-eaters). Juveniles should be fed every 1–2 days on appropriately sized insects (roaches, crickets), earthworms, and small whole prey such as pinky mice. Adults can be offered larger whole prey items — mice, rats, fish, crustaceans, and whole eggs — every 2–3 days. Overfeeding with rodents alone should be avoided; a varied diet is key to long-term health. All feeder items should be dusted with a quality calcium and vitamin supplement on a regular rotation.

ABOUT THIS SPECIES

The Quince Monitor is a striking, large monitor lizard from the tropical islands of the Maluku archipelago in eastern Indonesia, where it inhabits coastal forests, mangroves, and areas close to freshwater. It is named for its vivid yellow colouration — particularly prominent in juveniles — which fades to a more muted olive-yellow in adults but remains one of the most eye-catching colour schemes of any monitor species available in the hobby.

This is a species best suited to experienced reptile keepers who can commit to providing a genuinely large, well-appointed enclosure and a stimulating, varied diet. Quince monitors are intelligent, active, and inquisitive, and individuals that are handled regularly from a young age can become surprisingly interactive — though they remain powerful animals that command respect and confident, consistent handling.
