ProRep Calcium Sand Blue 5kg | Arid Reptile Vivarium Substrate

PR Calcium Sand Blue is a coloured calcium-based loose substrate designed for reptiles from arid and desert environments. Made from pure natural limestone, it serves a dual purpose: providing a naturalistic vivarium floor covering while also acting as a supplementary calcium source if ingested — making it a more considered choice than many inert sand alternatives.

Substrate Composition

Formulated from natural limestone, PR Calcium Sand Blue is unlikely to cause gut impaction if consumed in small quantities, unlike silica-based sands. This makes it a practical option for desert-dwelling species that naturally ingest substrate while feeding.

How to Use

Spread evenly across the base of the enclosure to a depth of at least 2.5–5cm (1–2 inches). A small section of the substrate can be lightly misted to create a localised humidity gradient within the vivarium without saturating the overall layer.

Maintenance

• Spot-clean daily to remove waste and soiled material
• Full replacement recommended every two to three weeks, or sooner if the substrate becomes heavily soiled or wet
• Avoid allowing the substrate to become saturated — excess moisture compromises hygiene and substrate integrity

Heat Source Compatibility

If using an under-tank heat mat as your primary heat source, keep the substrate layer shallow. A thick layer of loose substrate over a heat mat can restrict heat dissipation and cause the mat to overheat.

At 5kg, this bag provides enough substrate to set up or fully refresh a standard desert vivarium. The blue colouration suits naturalistic or stylised arid builds alike, while the limestone base means it earns its place functionally as well as aesthetically.
