Product Information

PR Beech Chips Coarse is a clean, natural loose substrate suited to a wide range of larger snakes, lizards, birds, and small mammals. Produced from kiln-dried wood sourced from sustainably managed forests, this coarse grade delivers a practical, no-nonsense substrate option for keepers who want a reliable floor covering without unnecessary additives or dust.

Dust-Free Natural Wood

The kiln-drying process drives out moisture and keeps dust levels low, making this a practical day-to-day substrate for vivariums where air quality and cleanliness matter. The coarse chip size is well suited to larger species that benefit from a chunkier, more robust substrate they can move through without displacing fine particles into their water or food.

Suitable Species

A versatile substrate across multiple groups — commonly used for larger colubrid and booid snakes, monitor lizards, tortoises, and a range of reptile-keeping setups where a natural wood chip floor covering is appropriate. Also used successfully in bird and small mammal enclosures.

Laying and Maintenance

  • Spread evenly across the enclosure floor to a minimum depth of 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm)
  • Spot-clean daily to remove waste and soiled material
  • Replace the entire substrate every two to three weeks, or sooner if it becomes heavily wet or soiled

Using with Heat Mats

If an under-tank heat mat is your primary heat source, avoid laying a deep layer of beech chips directly over it. Excessive substrate depth above a heat mat can restrict heat dissipation and cause the mat to overheat. Always follow the heat mat manufacturer's guidance on substrate depth when using under-tank heating.

At 10 litres, PR Beech Chips Coarse gives keepers a practical working quantity — enough to set up a mid-sized vivarium or refresh an existing one, with a substrate that's straightforward to manage and sourced responsibly.
