Suitable Species and Environments

This substrate is the go-to choice for keepers housing species that require elevated humidity — think tropical geckos, dart frogs, tree frogs, tarantulas, and similar forest or jungle inhabitants. The fine chip size works particularly well in smaller enclosures or where a tighter, more consistent substrate bed is preferred.

How to Use It

• Spread evenly across the enclosure floor to a minimum depth of 5cm (2 inches)
• Mist or dampen to raise humidity, but avoid waterlogging — saturated substrate breaks down faster and can harbour bacteria
• Spot-clean daily to remove waste and maintain hygiene
• Replace the entire substrate every two to three weeks, or sooner if heavily soiled

Using with Heat Mats

If an under-tank heat mat is your primary heat source, keep the substrate layer shallow. A thick layer of bark chips can trap heat beneath the mat, causing it to overheat. Always follow the heat mat manufacturer's guidance on safe substrate depths.
