Product Information

PL Vermiculite Fine BULK - 100 Litre is a natural, inert incubation medium suited to reptile keepers who need a reliable, large-volume supply. Made from exfoliated volcanic rock, it works equally well as a substrate for invertebrates such as tarantulas, and is a go-to choice for anyone incubating reptile eggs at scale.

What It Is

Vermiculite is a 100% natural material derived from exfoliated volcanic rock. It is inert, meaning it will not break down, decay, or develop mould — making it a stable and hygienic medium across extended incubation periods. The fine particle grade offers consistent moisture retention and good contact around eggs.

Using It as an Incubation Medium

Add a deep layer of moistened vermiculite to your incubation container before placing eggs. For many species, a moisture ratio of 2 parts vermiculite to 1 part water by weight provides a suitable starting point, though individual species requirements vary and should always be researched in advance. Place eggs so the top third remains exposed, and ensure eggs do not make contact with one another during incubation.

Handling Eggs Correctly

When transferring eggs from the laying site to the incubation medium, always keep them oriented the same way up — inverting eggs after laying can be fatal to the developing embryo. Take time to set up your incubation box and have a calibrated incubator running before eggs are laid, not after.

Invertebrate Use

Beyond incubation, fine vermiculite can be used as a dry or lightly moistened substrate for spiders, offering a stable base layer that supports burrowing species or egg sac incubation setups.

Bulk Format

At 100 litres, this format suits breeders, reptile collections with multiple breeding pairs, or keepers who prefer to stock up rather than reorder frequently. The fine grade is consistent throughout the bag.

Whether you are incubating a first clutch or running an established breeding programme, having a quality, inert medium in sufficient quantity removes one variable from a process where detail genuinely matters.
