Product Information

PL Bark Chips Coarse BULK – 70 Litre is a large-format natural substrate aimed at keepers who maintain multiple enclosures or simply prefer to buy in bulk and refill less often. Coarse bark chips are well suited to humid-environment species — forest and jungle reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates — where a natural, breathable substrate helps support the moisture levels these animals need to thrive.

Species Suitability

This substrate is designed for species that require a humid vivarium or terrarium environment. Forest-dwelling reptiles such as crested geckos, chameleons, and tree boas, as well as amphibians like dart frogs and white's tree frogs, and a wide range of invertebrates, all benefit from a substrate that can hold ambient moisture without becoming waterlogged.

Setting Up and Maintaining Humidity

Spread the bark chips evenly across the base of the enclosure to a minimum depth of 5 cm (approximately 2 inches). The substrate can be lightly moistened to raise humidity levels within the enclosure — mist as needed, but avoid saturation or waterlogging, which can promote bacterial growth and cause hygiene issues.

Spot-Cleaning and Replacement

  • Spot-clean daily to remove waste and maintain enclosure hygiene
  • Complete substrate changes should be carried out every two to three weeks as standard
  • Replace more frequently if the substrate becomes heavily soiled before that point

Heatmat Compatibility — Important Note

If you are using an under-tank heatmat as a heat source, avoid applying a thick layer of bark chips directly over it. A deep substrate layer can insulate the mat and cause it to overheat. Always follow the heatmat manufacturer's specific guidance on substrate depth above the mat.

At 70 litres, this bulk bag makes it straightforward to maintain correct substrate depth across large or multiple set-ups, reducing how often you need to reorder without compromising on the natural, species-appropriate environment your animals require.
