What makes it suitable for reptiles

Aspen is a long-established choice for dry and semi-arid vivarium setups. It is highly absorbent, which helps contain localised soiling without the whole substrate becoming compromised, and its low dust content makes it safe for animals and keepers alike. How to use it

Spread the substrate evenly across the floor of the enclosure to a minimum depth of 2.5–5cm (1–2 inches). This gives ground-dwelling species enough material to move through comfortably and allows spot-cleaning to be effective without disturbing the entire bed.

Maintenance

• Spot-clean daily to remove waste and damp patches
• Replace the full substrate every two to three weeks under normal conditions

If an under-tank heat mat is your primary heat source, avoid building up a thick layer of aspen directly over it. Excess depth can restrict heat dissipation and cause the mat to overheat. Always follow the heat mat manufacturer's guidance on recommended substrate depth.
