Scientific Name: Varanus jobiensis
Source: CB
Adult Size: Typically 95–120cm total length
Native Range: New Guinea (including the Biak Islands) and surrounding lowland regions
Enclosure: A custom-built Viperia PVC vivarium sized to suit — use the Vivarium Calculator to spec the right dimensions — ideally at least 180×60×120cm to accommodate this active, semi-arboreal species comfortably; provide a deep, moisture-retaining substrate such as coconut fibre or topsoil mix, multiple sturdy climbing branches, cork bark hides at both the warm and cool ends, and a large water feature or soak dish
Heating: Basking spot of 40–45°C; ambient warm side 28–32°C; cool side 24–26°C; night-time drop to 22–24°C is acceptable
Humidity: 70–90%; achieved through a deep moisture-retaining substrate, regular misting, and a large water feature — good ventilation is essential to prevent stagnant air
UVB: A 12% UVB tube run along most of the vivarium's width, positioned so the animal can bask 25–35cm from the lamp; as an active, diurnal (day-active) species from tropical lowland forest, strong UVB provision is important for long-term health
Diet: Primarily insects (roaches, crickets, mealworms), earthworms, whole prey items such as crustaceans or chicks, and occasional fish; juveniles should be fed 3 times a week. Babies & juveniles bugs 2 times a week. adults every 2–3 days — variety is key to a balanced diet
ABOUT THIS SPECIES
The Peach Throat Monitor is a strikingly beautiful species native to the humid lowland rainforests and riparian (riverside) habitats of New Guinea, immediately recognisable by its vivid peachy-orange throat colouration and intricate dorsal patterning. The Biak locality in particular is highly sought after by collectors for its especially vibrant colour expression, making these animals a genuine showpiece in any serious monitor collection.
These are intelligent, curious monitors that can become quite responsive to their keeper over time, though they retain a bold, active character and are best suited to experienced reptile keepers who can meet their considerable space, humidity, and enrichment needs with confidence. If you're ready to commit to a large, stimulating setup and a varied feeding routine, the Peach Throat is an exceptionally rewarding species to keep.
