ABOUT THIS SPECIES

Morelia spilota harrisoni, commonly known as the Irian Jaya Carpet Python, is a medium-sized subspecies of carpet python native to the forests and savannas of the Irian Jaya (West Papua) region of Indonesia. It is known for its striking pattern of tan, brown, and black markings that provide excellent camouflage in natural habitats.

This species is semi-arboreal and often utilizes trees, shrubs, and rocky areas while hunting. Like other carpet pythons, it is primarily nocturnal and uses constriction to subdue prey such as small mammals and birds.

In captivity, Irian Jaya Carpet Pythons adapt well when provided with a spacious enclosure that includes climbing opportunities, secure hiding areas, and proper thermal gradients. Maintaining stable temperatures, moderate humidity, and a diet of appropriately sized prey supports healthy growth, natural behaviour, and overall wellbeing.
