Enclosure: A minimum 120×60×120cm Viperia PVC vivarium is recommended for an adult — this is a strongly arboreal (tree-dwelling) species that needs significant vertical height. Furnish generously with horizontal and diagonal branches of varying diameters, dense live or artificial foliage for cover and security, and a bioactive or humid-retaining substrate below. Secure, well-ventilated construction is essential, as these snakes are active and inquisitive.
Heating: Aim for a warm basking zone of around 28–30°C, an ambient mid-range of 24–27°C, and a gentle night-time drop to 20–22°C. A low-wattage overhead radiant heat source (such as a halogen or ceramic emitter) positioned at the upper end of the enclosure works well alongside a thermostat.
Humidity: Maintain humidity at 70–80%, reflecting the humid tropical and subtropical forest environments this species inhabits. Mist the enclosure at least once daily, use moisture-retaining substrate, and ensure good airflow to prevent stagnant damp conditions — live planting helps buffer humidity levels naturally.
UVB: A 6% UVB tube run along most of the vivarium's width, positioned so the animal can bask within approximately 20–30cm of it. As a diurnal (day-active) forest species encountered in partial-canopy conditions, a 6% output is appropriate and suitably available in longer tube lengths to properly cover the enclosure.
Diet: In the wild, Oriental Whip Snakes feed predominantly on lizards, with small frogs and occasionally small rodents also taken. In captivity, appropriately sized anole lizards or other small lizards are typically accepted; some individuals can be transitioned onto pre-killed or frozen-thawed prey with patience. Feed juveniles every 5–7 days and adults every 7–10 days, adjusting based on body condition.
