ABOUT THIS SPECIES

Ptyas mucosus, commonly called the Oriental Rat Snake, is a large, fast-moving colubrid snake widely distributed across South and Southeast Asia. It is non-venomous and known for its speed, alert behaviour, and strong climbing ability.

This species inhabits forests, grasslands, farmland, and even areas close to human settlements. It is an active daytime hunter that feeds on rodents, birds, lizards, and other small vertebrates, making it an important natural pest controller in many ecosystems.

In captivity, Oriental Rat Snakes require spacious enclosures with climbing structures, secure hides, and room to move. Providing a proper temperature gradient, moderate humidity, and a diet of appropriately sized prey supports healthy activity levels, natural behaviour, and overall wellbeing.
